Make sure the shop you’re going to use to machine your product is reputable. The last thing you want is some fly by night operation that doesn’t know what they’re doing.
Make sure that the quote you receive is fair and most importantly realistic. Far too often businesses fall in love with the shop that gives them the lowest quote. Remember, you’re getting a low quote for a reason, and quite often one of the reasons is poor workmanship. The last headaches you ever want are reworks, shipping delays, and excuses!
Believe it or not, a higher quote is often your best bet! Remember the old adage “You Get What You Pay For,” well it’s true. And, more importantly, it’s the fairest price for both parties involved. Let’s face it, any “reputable” job shop is not and cannot gouge you on price. Like any business, they have to set their prices in order to make a little money while giving their customer a fair price as well. I understand no one wants to pay a little more for something, including me. However, if your product is machined well, shipped on time, and your mind is put at ease, I consider a higher quote a Home Run!
The last and most important point I will give to you can be put into one word “TRUST”. Doing business with a company should be far more than e-mailing blueprints, sending invoices, and receiving checks. Building relationships is the key to a successful business partnership. If you trust the people involved, you are well on your way to an enjoyable and profitable path for many years to come.
